There is also one other thing that came out of the UA forum and may be specific to the UAD plug-ins, I'm not sure, which was to switch on "Optimise for Streaming" in the playback engine. This seems to have resolved the random crashes and I was already doing 'Cmd S' in my sleep. Ultimately not a good thing to do but there you go.

Now, I also read that although it might look like the auto backup might be the cause of the crash that in reality, it is still most likely a bad plug-in that PT is trying to save settings for during the auto backup. NetMix PRO 5.4 has been digitally signed and certified on macOS up to version 10.13.2 (High Sierra). This has led me and others with similar issues to conclude that auto backup was causing PT to crash. The time stamp of the unusable backup file would be the same as the time that PT crashed. After a crash I would try to load the most recent backup to be told via a dialog box that the backup wasn't going to load so I would try the next one time wise, which would load. Recent posts to the DUC and the UA forum have noted something that I was also seeing.
